accident of fate
Well there’s no bottom to a city canyon
And its walls are tenant shacks
Filled with trying to carry on
And get the landlords off their backs.
And there’s the men with the silent voices
Holding your number in their hands
Screaming all of your choices
That are drowned out by a silent band.
Then for want of a sound to make sense of the town
The tenants suggest a name
But as the tenants start to call the sky starts to fall
Causing the ascension of the woman of shame.
And my confusion swirls as the cheerleader twirls
Her baton of a thousand games.
Is it inside or outside; it’s hard to decide
The direction from life’s starting gate?
I’d go that extra mile to be destiny’s child
But I’m trapped by an accident of fate.
The canyon of the city is much deeper than its pity
And there’s always another game to lose.
I turn into my head to escape being led
But am met by hometown boos
Set in motion by the trick of a momentary slip
Of my little boy baseball shoes.
Am I safe or am I out; I can’t tell by the shout
Of a call that forgets its name.
And though the clock was set it just seems to forget
Thinking anyway it’s all the same.
And I push as hard as I can to remember the plan
So my step won’t be late.
With a practiced eye I try to meet the sky
Just where it meets the date.
I study it hard , turn over every card
Look through every sidewalk grate
But no matter these lessons I’m flipped back into the wrong present
By an accident of fate.
And I’m left to think just how to link
An event with a date.
And where can you go to escape the blow
Delivered by an accident of fate.
Then it’s back inside where everything hides
From the movement of the wheel of fortune.
I’m rowing on a river through a sun that makes me shiver
Moving towards Dr. Joke’s isle of torture.
He drags out the past to make sure that it lasts
No matter that it’s dragging its feet.
I’m at a masked ball trying to melt into the wall
Lost in a world of deceit.
It doesn’t improve when it’s time to remove
My mask that’s meant to bring luck.
For time has frozen cause the mask that I’ve chosen
Has become forever stuck.
And I dive into the water to escape the slaughter
Of Joke’s misplaced time
Swimming through centuries of beckoning penitentiaries
Trying to reach the other side.
I’m dripping wet trying not to forget
The placement of our special date
But my attempt is doomed; I’m flipped back into the wrong room
By an accident of fate.
And I’m left to think just how to link
An event with a date.
And where can you go to escape the blow
Delivered by an accident of fate.
I’m back in my interior studying all the criteria
That are needed to get from A to B.
The path is straight; there’s no way I can be late
Just don’t break the glass menagerie.
It’s really small, can hardly be seen at all.
I’ve never seen anything finer.
But a form from my past makes me shatter glass.
It’s that treacherous interior designer.
And it’s back into the light of the day’s longest night
For a meeting that’s precisely set
To coincide with the crossroad that can’t hide
And the sign post that I can’t forget.
One more step and I’m there but the ground turns to air
Cause though I know that I’m not late
The celestial bus (it claimed it must)
Has already left the starting gate.
And I’m left to think just how to link
An event with a date.
And where can you go to escape the blow
Delivered by an accident of fate.
