Alice holds her door open.

More than words are spoken.

Light breaks through red wine coloring cut glass.

I enter her silver palace.

Receive her ruby chalice.

We are reflected broken images of a silver past.

Alice courts chance

To stop time’s advance.

Speaks about images that reflect on broken glass.

I read for Alice.

Lifted by her ballast.

She puts her fingers on my mouth not wanting me to ask.

Alice lights a candle.

Takes hold of the handle.

Goes for a toast but stops in a smile.

I lift my glass.

Think about High Mass.

Get lost in her mouth that time will not defile.

Alice shows me her book.

Lets me take a look.

I see blank pages and am grateful for the chance.

She takes my hand.

Nods to the band.

Catches onto life’s rhythms and we begin to dance.

Alice’s silver clock

Makes time stop.

As much as I want to I know I will not stay.

She says, “There is no more”.

Walks me to the door.

Smiles through a wink and says, “Tomorrow is another day.”

Oh the gold it doth deceive long before it takes its leave

And youth grows younger every day

But if the truth be known every road leads to home

No matter the card that you play.
