but i thought you
Autumn's fall's leaves on the earth
Skeletons that hide their worth.
My steps can be heard.
It’s not my intent to hide my words.
Plants shaken by startled deer.
They move off; I’ve gotten too near.
But leafless plants don’t conceal
Their new location, though they kneel.
The deer think they see the truth.
With their eyes they see the proof,
As I walk past their hiding place
Of trees that seem to give them grace.
Could I bring thunder to their lives?
Who is it that would survive
That human sacrificial storm
Of dying and being born?
They don’t know who to hide from.
It’s hard to know who’ll be the one.
They use instincts to survive;
Thoughts can kill you while your still alive.
And when the hunting dogs do come
With pounding feet and hanging tongues
Is there enough blood in their life-well
To drown those dogs from paradise's hell?
I sit in my mind of protective trees
Your footsteps approach me.
I can’t be seen; I can’t be touched.
Instincts, thoughts; I’ve got too much.
My hiding place can’t be seen.
It’s got an invisible screen.
And I can tell friend from foe.
Unlike those deer, I know, I know
So you walk on by.
I’m free again to breathe in sky,
To live another day
And to be the one whom the dogs obey.
Ah but if I only knew
The thoughts streaming inside of you,
Then I’d know as you walk on by
You know it's your screen that stops your die.
So we live another day,
Protected along our way,
As pink clouds turn to grey,
As our trees violently sway.
A gift purely from intention,
Creatures of our own invention.
