mouth of diamonds, mouth of hearts
You fell for a smile, a smile with a diamond tooth.
I thought the only thing that we could lose would be our ageless youth.
But you showed me, you showed me I was wrong.
How strong do you have to be, dear lord, how strong?
You took your hand from my sleeve.
Diamond kisses made you want to leave.
A sparkle got inside your eyes till you couldn’t see me anymore.
As you stumbled to its source of magnetic ore.
Mouth of diamonds, mouth of hearts,
Which one wins the game?
Please don’t say when we part
That they are both the same.
I didn’t see when you started to fall.
Maybe I couldn’t see you anymore at all.
Sometimes things just slide that way.
Or so it seems to me as I watch myself decay.
Maybe I didn’t know you as I should.
Maybe it wouldn’t have done any good.
There’s lots of maybe’s there.
But maybe one of them is right.
Maybe I don’t really much care
As I whisper to myself, “Good night”.
But no matter how attractive it sometimes seems
If a diamond was simply anything that gleams,
Somewhere I want to think that it would be a shame.
Though I am not assigning blame.
Mouth of diamonds, mouth of hearts,
Which one wins the game?
Please don’t say when we part
That they are both the same.
