rainbow's end

Tails flicked  and hoofs kicked

And horns they started to blow.

It was getting late through time's gate

Almost too late for me to go

Follow a dream in a written scheme

Whose end I didn't know.

Every route looks good

When it's understood

From a point far below.

Cows spilled out they'd lost all doubt

Of a limit called full throttle.

Uncertainty dies in springtime skies

When cows see broken milk bottles.

I walked the land 'til I came to stand

In the middle of four legged stances.

I craved their touches

Even offered them bunches

Of sweet home grown grasses.

They gave me their eyes

But not their thighs

As any demure girl might.

Trying to reach 'em without preachin'

I asked, “you turning green to white?”

You can ask about sunscapes and seascapes

Any old time is right

But asking 'bout interior landscapes

Is best left for the night.

And like a love just lost those cows disappeared

Before they were out of sight.

I'm doomed to go on walking

'Til the end of time is reached.

It's as close as around the corner

When time itself is breached.

One step closer to destiny

A woman shouted my name.

Or it seemed my name and me she wanted

But to me it was all the same.

Near the crest of a hill on that summer's day

I saw the intent of her cry

Her Alsatian's smiling teeth

Had completely replaced the sky.

A blood oath she swore

Drawing her knife from its sheath

The next time our paths crossed

The dog would own a leash.

Around the bend of the hill

The dog was walking alone.

Carrying a six inch leash

And me just a six foot bone.

And like a love just lost

By talking to an empty listening post

You find it's the heart sound needs to hit

It's the dog you need to talk with most.

I'm doomed to go on walking

'Til the end of time is reached.

It's as close as around the corner

When time itself is breached.

One more step in the only direction

On that twisted unmarked path

Took me to where in purple gloom

Grew the grapes of wrath.

Autumn's solid promise

Stood waiting for man's pressure

To liquefy its brains like it does to man

Who then calls it pleasure.

To protect man's native grapes

From nature's native birds

A net had been stretched over them

But carried no warning words

So that a blackbird now spread-eagle

Had struggled to its death

Tangled in that protective net

For what's protection worth?

And like a love just lost

By jealousy on patrol

You find things you hold most dearly

Are best held with no hands at all.

I'm doomed to go on walking

'Til the end of time is reached.

It's as close as around the corner

When time itself is breached.

Left, right, up, and down

It's all a navigator's fright.

The next step I took turned out

Any which way but right.

Into a world turned blind

By winter's shroud of white.

Deeper than the sound of love

Weeping in the night.

So deep that my footprints alone

Would be found in tomorrow's light.

To answer the question repeated

By every man on the rack

Could you and if so should you

Even think of going back.

With god's ruler step for step

I matched yesterday's measured stroll.

Now still holding god's ruler i'll forever see

The last step before the fall

When to my everlasting horror

Hell fire would melt it all.

And like a love just lost

By traveling to the past

You find the memories of the future

Are the only things that last.

I'm doomed to go on walking

'Til the end of time is reached.

It's as close as around the corner

When time itself is breached.
