reflections in rain water
We walked in the morning rain
The balance between loss and gain
Not tipping towards either’s plane
In a pink sea of heather.
There was no restraint
As we searched in vain
For the overgrown terrain
Where we first walked together.
Turbulence ruled our ravaged brains
But we’d promised to never complain
From our very first moment until forever.
So without any sign of pain
We waited for the rain
To wash away life’s dirty game
And then call it on account of rainy weather.
But a lightening bolt brought the flame
That set her eyes in sharp relief
Igniting my skull’s mains
To spew out the certain belief
That with unclean hands there’s always blame
That excuses can be made lame
And honor brought to shame.
For in that flash I saw the rain
Had washed the color from her eyes
Revealing a sign on rusted chains
Speaking of her disdain
That answers artful lies
When you’re too long on the life-train.
When suddenly it comes to me
It’s not her eyes that I see
But their angle that had turned reflective.
And her wish to be protective
Had missed its tender objective
And that what it is that I see
Is what the rain reveals about me.
